Hidden amidst the landscapes of Kōkeʻe State Park is a remarkable piece of history—the Kōkeʻe Civilian Conservation Corps Camp. With its roots stretching back to the 1930s, this camp isn’t just a collection of buildings; it’s a story of conservation, grasping the resilience of Kaua’i’s community. Let’s dive into how this 11-building site became the heart of restoration and preservation on Kauaʻi.
A Legacy of Conservation
The Kōkeʻe CCC Camp was built in 1935 as part of the nationwide Civilian Conservation Corps program. Young men aged 17 to 28 dedicated themselves to restoring Kauaʻi’s forest after decades of destruction caused by overgrazing. Their efforts included planting trees, maintaining trails, and building essential infrastructure. Many trails they worked on, such as the Alaka’i Swamp Trail, are still enjoyed by hikers today!
The CCC also improved access to scenic areas, constructed fire roads, and even created facilities like water tanks to help sustain the island’s natural resources. Their work laid the foundation for the thriving park we see today.
From Wartime to Decline
During World War II, the camp’s purpose shifted. 1943, it was repurposed as a military headquarters for the 443rd Aviation & Construction Battalion. It played a crucial role in alternative communications during the war, connecting Kauaʻi to the outside world.
However, after the war, the camp saw less use. By the 1980s, the once-vibrant camp had fallen into disrepair, with broken windows, overgrown brambles, and abandoned buildings. It seemed like the camp’s story might end there—until Hui o Laka stepped in.
A New Beginning
1989, Hui o Laka launched a restoration project to breathe new life into the historic site. Volunteers and generous contributions helped bring the camp back to its former glory. Buildings were repaired, brambles cleared, and the camp became a place of connection. In honor of Joseph M. Souza, a former forest ranger and Hui o Laka leader, the camp was officially renamed the Joseph M. Souza CCC Camp.
Today, the camp is recognized as a Hawaiʻi State and National Historic Landmark, a testament to its enduring legacy and importance to Kauaʻi’s history.
